Where are you, God?

A prayer for the moments when God is hard to find.

Where are you, God?
Was that you
in the quiet hush of the sunrise,
interrupted by birds chirping
on the power lines outside my window?

Was that you
in the warm cuddles of a dog
who woke me up
with those big puppy eyes and sloppy kisses?

Was that you
in my buttered toast,
made of milk and wheat
that was grown with the land and water of your earth?

Was that you
in the honeysuckle scent
of counter top cleaner
that transported me back to my grandmother’s kitchen?

Was that you
in the endless game of phone tag
that reminded me
how much two friends love each other?

Was that you
in the tear-filled eyes
and gut-wrenching pain that came
when I didn’t realize I could actually laugh that much?

Was that you
when I tripped on the sidewalk
and I looked backward at the crooked concrete
and gave myself a little grace?

Was that you
in that last, bedtime breath
before I drifted off to dream?

Is that you
in all my breaths?

It’s you.
In all my breaths.

Spirit of life, never leave me.

Amen.
